This is one of my favorite photos of all time. This shot was unplanned and came about simply because I brought my camera with me on a walk down the beach. Seems like so long ago… Those are my two oldest girls, back when they were the only two kids we had. I love that those two are as close today as they are in this photo. The beach was just North of Jacksonville and was part of Mayport Naval Station. The Navy was very protective of the dunes and the shore line for the sea turtles that would nest there. No buildings or lights or boardwalks were permitted. My wife and I aren’t big into crowds and commotion so this wonderfully natural, quiet shoreline was a great place to take the kids to play.
I used a Nikon D100 with a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. The coloration was done using Photoshop. It was very simple to do – I created a Saturation Adjustment layer and ticked the ‘Colorize’ box and used a hue of around 38 and desaturated it to all but about 30 percent. I then worked that layer’s mask to selectively reveal the original color of the kids. Voila!
